Back in April, I shared that I was building something personal — something for my daughter, and for every family navigating the daily challenges of behavioral issues.
Today, it’s live. VillageMetrics is now available on iOS and Android.
It’s a tool that helps families like mine stop flying blind, and start making better decisions about their child’s care with confidence. Instead of fumbling with complex menus and forms, you simply record voice journals about your child’s day. AI transforms those natural conversations into structured data, highlighting behavior patterns and surfacing insights about medications, therapies, and daily routines. It brings together your entire support team in one place.
But that’s just what it does. Let me tell you why I built it, and how.
My daughter Sydney is autistic, with significant support needs. Her behaviors can be intense, for her and for everyone around her. And like many families, we’ve found ourselves turning to heavy duty medications with serious side effects, just trying to manage through the day. But even then, we’re left guessing:
“Did the new medication help?” “Is that therapy making a difference?” “What actually triggers these behaviors?”
We’ve been making tough decisions based on fragmented memories and recency bias. I built VillageMetrics because that wasn’t good enough — not for my daughter, and not for the thousands of families trying to make informed choices about medications and care without the data to back them up.

Not Just an MVP — Packed with Power Features

This isn’t some rushed minimum viable product. It’s polished and feature-complete, with capabilities that usually take years to build. Here’s what’s included:
Voice Journaling. Just talk about your child’s day — that’s it. VillageMetrics turns your voice into structured insights, behavior scores, and patterns automatically, so you can stay focused on parenting, not data entry.
Ask Anything. Chat with an AI assistant that has full access to all your journal data. Ask questions like “Is there a pattern to when morning routines go smoothly versus falling apart?” or “What does our ABA therapist do differently when Sydney gets frustrated that helps her calm down faster?” and get answers informed from months of journal entries.
Multi-User Collaboration. Bring your whole village together — parents, teachers, therapists, caregivers — with granular permissions so everyone contributes what they see while you stay in control.
Real-Time Updates. Get notifications when someone logs an entry, with AI-generated summaries so you know what happened before you even open the app.
Medication Tracking. Track dosages, timing, and see correlations with behavior patterns to understand what’s actually working.
Data Export. Generate reports for medical appointments with real data instead of relying on memory.
Connect Your AI Assistant. Use our published MCP to connect AI assistants like Claude directly to your VillageMetrics data for even deeper analysis and insights.
Full HIPAA Compliance. Private, secure, encrypted. You choose who sees what.

How We Built It

28 serverless AWS microservices. Over 500,000 lines of code. 3,489 commits. React Native frontend, AWS Bedrock for AI analysis with Amazon Nova Pro and Claude Sonnet 4.5, Pinecone for vector search, all built with HIPAA compliance from the start. Built in one year by a small team.
How? AI.
In development, AI wasn’t just helping—it wrote the vast majority of the code. Using agentic development tools like Cursor and Claude, AI brought a level of intelligence to the problem that would have been completely inaccessible otherwise — the equivalent of what a team of dozens of engineers would contribute. That’s what made it possible to go from idea to feature packed production quality software in a year, using the methods I describe in my book The Enterprise Vibe Coding Playbook.
Of course, AI didn’t work alone. Massive credit to my co-founder Ryan Moseley, designer George DiLorenzo, and Sydney’s ABA therapists and BCBAs who gave honest feedback throughout. AI was the force multiplier, but it took all of us to turn this into reality.

Why This Really Matters

Dealing with intense behavioral challenges is tough for families to go through. It makes all of life more difficult. It’s hard for your whole family, and it’s especially hard for your child. How are they supposed to get an education if behaviors are getting in the way? How do you find childcare? How do you live a normal life?
The data we started collecting through this process actually helped us transition Sydney off a medication onto one with a better side effect profile. She’s doing better lately, in part because of that. It’s a big deal.
I know there are other families out there navigating the same struggles. My heart really does go out to anyone trying to figure this out. Even though I might not know their names or their stories, I hope that somehow I’m intersecting with their lives in a positive way through this app. That thought has helped carry me through all the work it took to build this.
